HOW TO ORDER

Send us a list of the books you wish to purchase. Include the list name, item number, author, short title, and price. We will reply with an email quote, including postage and packing. We also notify you if a book has been recently sold. Books will be posted when we receive your payment.

If you locate a book in our booklists, check first it is still available by looking up our database, which is updated twice weekly.

SECONDHAND BOOKS AND THE GST

We have currently (2006) decided to voluntarily drop our registration for GST. Therefore GST is not included in the prices of books sold to Australian customers. However our books can often still be claimed as tax deductions.

The price of books sold to Australian customers generally includes 10% GST (Goods and Services Tax). Customers often ask: Why should I pay GST for a secondhand book, when the GST has already been paid on the new book? The GST is levied not on the book, but on the supply of a book, that is, each time the book is sold.

POSTAGE AND PACKING

All our books are expertly wrapped and placed in padded envelopes, or in envelopes and boxes containing bubble-wrap. We may charge a small packing and handling fee of $A2 on low-value orders. Postage is charged at cost. We generally post books by surface mail within Australia, and by Air Mail to overseas countries. We do not recommend sea mail from Australia as delivery time is often three or four months.

GENUINE GUARANTEE

If you are not satisfied that a book has been correctly described, and you notify us within a reasonable time (no more than four weeks after you would normally receive the book by post), we will issue a full (100%) refund. We may request that you return the book first. Of course, we will also refund your payment if the book is lost in the mail.

VISITING OUR SHOP

Since June 2005, we have traded online business only. Therefore, sorry - visits to our shop to browse our stock are not available at this time.

PAYING US

1. CREDIT CARDS
We accept Visa and Mastercard (but not all debit cards). Supply the card type (Visa, Mastercard), the 16-digit card number, the expiry date, and the exact name on the card.

If internet security concerns you, send credit card details as follows:

  1. Go to our home page (www.svb.com.au) and click on the link Pay Us Securely (right side of the home page, perhaps scrolling down a bit). This brings up the Books & Collectibles secure server). Fill out your personal and payment details, and type the name of the books in the message box.
  2. Split the card details over two emails separated by one hour or more.
  3. By air mail letter, including your signature.
  4. As a fax, including your signature. Please note time differences. If sending a fax, please notify us first, as our computer fax is turned off overnight.
  5. Use the PayPal secure server (www.paypal.com). Open up a free account with PayPal (linked to your cheque or credit card), and then send the money to our PayPal account. This method is also useful for cards we do not accept directly (for example, American Express, Discover).
We do not accept large orders solely on the basis of an unsigned email message. Please confirm the order by sending us an airmail letter or fax containing the card details and your personal signature.

2. DIRECT DEPOSIT
We accept electronic payment direct to our bank account. If you choose this method, we will provide our account details.

3. CHEQUES, MONEY ORDERS, BANK DRAFTS
AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMERS: We accept personal cheques, bank cheques and money orders (postal notes). We may choose to bank these first before posting your books.
OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS: We currently do not accept personal cheques, bank cheques and money orders in foreign currency (major libraries accepted). Foreign personal cheques take up to 6 weeks to clear, and a currency conversion fee of $11 Australian (for example, $6.50 US or 4.50 GBP) must be added, which our bank charges to convert your payment into Australian currency.

However, customers from Britain, Canada, New Zealand and other Commonwealth countries can send a bank draft in Australian dollars. A bank draft is a special type of bank cheque drawn on a bank other than the issuing bank (in this case, drawn on an Australian bank). Some banks in the United States (eg, Citibank, HSBC Bank) also may be able to issue bank drafts in Australian dollars.
